The Lester Ellis Story

As told to Robert Drane

ABC Books

The story of Lester Ellis, ‘The Master Blaster’, is a classic tale of a working-class hero. With no prospects and only one discernable talent – the ability to beat up other men in the boxing ring – Lester vaulted from obscurity to celebrity at nineteen, when he became IBF World junior-lightweight champion in 1985. Five months later, the title was gone, and so began a long journey, marked by minor success in the ring, controvery outside of it, financial hardship, marriage, children, ill-fated comebacks, and the alcoholism that left his life in ruins and almost ended it. By doing what he did best, Lester tried to reclaim something of his early success, but ultimately, the neurotic drives that made him a great fighter almost destroyed him, and he has only now emerged into a new life.

In his own unique voice, vigorous, colourful and direct, Lester Ellis tells a rollicking tale of a world in which even winning is losing, except for a very fortunate few.
